The Story That Won’t Come

You know exactly the story I’m talking about.

The one that just won’t come together.

You have the basic concept, you have some characters for crowd control, but you just don’t have the spark to bring it home. Things aren’t gelling. You can’t see the end.

I’ve had several stories like that, and I have several more I’m trying to get to come together.

One story I literally sat on for 10 years. Literally. And then I was talking to someone about it, and it call came out in a rush. The ending, the things I wanted to do, the themes…one conversation, and out it came. I sat down and wrote it all in a weekend, because my brain was on fire.

I had another story that I wasn’t smart enough to write. I knew exactly what I wanted to do, how I wanted it to affect people, but I didn’t have the chops at the time to really write it. Now that I know a lot more, I’ve got the first arc of the story down, and I know how to craft all kinds of stories around the central concept.

Don’t give up on your stories. They can take time to come together. Inspiration comes in its own time. Create other things while you wait for what you consider your gems to come together. The ones that elude you will come in time.
