Maybe It’s Me…
I don’t know. Maybe I’m jaded. Maybe I have a dour outlook on life ( life meaning comics ). It’s quite possible that it’s me. I’m willing to accept that as a possibility.
I’m a moderator at Digital Webbing, and there are times when I see something that just makes me shake my head.
There’s a help wanted ad in the Collaborations section that makes me shake my head at the naivete of some creators.
The basic pitch: come make comics, which will be pitched to Image and some other indie companies. If the books get picked up, the creators will be paid at the page rate of the companies. If the books don’t get picked up, then they’ll be paid after a Kickstarter campaign. If the campaign fails, the creators will be paid a small, flat fee.
I just find it to be pretty sad that in this day and age, there are creators out there who still think that Image pays a page rate. Or that any company that’s open to submissions pays much of an actual rate. At least there’s the acknowledgment that a possible Kickstarter may fail, so there are some contingencies in place.
Maybe it’s me. I just feel that with a much more mature internet and the ability to search out damned near anything, the information needed to make decisions about creating a comic (and the associated costs) are there. Image page rates and all that other stuff…it’s just easy to look up and see that the thought is just wrong.
Do your research, people. Wanting to create a comic is great. It’s laudable. Just don’t think it’s going to be free, cheap, or easy. Not if you want to make a good one.
